The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security has deployed staff to 24 state hospitals to issue birth certificates right after delivery.
The ministry also announced that 126 state and private hospitals are now equipped with the electronic system that allows nurses to record births instantly.
The ministry’s executive director, Ngidinua Daniel, in a notice earlier this week urged parents to register their children immediately after birth, highlighting major improvements in early civil registration through the country’s new electronic birth notification system.
Daniel said the reforms are meant to ensure that no child leaves a health facility without being recorded in the national system.
“The system allows us to capture vital events in real time, ensuring every child is registered promptly and accurately,” he said.
He added that early registration is crucial for guaranteeing children’s access to essential services later in life.
