Liberation struggle veteran and Swapo stalwart Matias Hishoono was laid to rest on Saturday at the Eenhana Heroes Shrine in the Ohangwena region, marking the conclusion of a week-long period of national mourning.
Hundreds of mourners — among them senior government officials, traditional leaders, liberation struggle veterans, Swapo members and local residents — gathered to bid farewell to a man widely revered for his steadfast commitment to Namibia’s liberation and his lifelong service to the ruling party.
Speakers at the burial ceremony paid tribute to Hishoono as a disciplined revolutionary, principled leader and unifier who remained loyal to the ideals of the struggle until his final days.

He was remembered for his humility, Christian faith and dedication to mentoring younger generations, with many noting that his impact reached far beyond politics into community upliftment and nation-building.
Chief mourner president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah noted that Hishoono’s interment at the Eenhana Heroes Shrine affirmed his place among Namibia’s national heroes, whose legacy of sacrifice and service will continue to inspire generations to come.
He leaves behind his family, comrades and a grateful nation.
