A SONG that is normally laced with President Sam Nujoma’s name was instead sung in praise of his protege-turned-political opponent, Hidipo Hamutenya.
A couple of hundred well-wishers, sympathisers, supporters and curious onlookers yesterday clapped and ululated as Hamutenya arrived nearly one hour late at the top floor conference room of a local hotel to give a press conference. They sang a Swapo adaptation of a hymn which usually praises Nujoma for leading them through the struggle to Independence. But Nujoma’s name was taken out and instead they concentrated on verses stating that “even if blood is spilled, we shall not flinch”.Hamutenya thanked his supporters, who packed the room, saying what was supposed to be a media conference appeared to have turned into a rally. His statements were interrupted by the clap of hands and laughter when he joked or dismissed what he regarded as ridiculous allegations against him.Hamutenya called the press conference to give his side of the story about his “extraordinary” sacking by President Nujoma on Monday night. His tone was largely defiant ahead of the special Swapo congress where he is one of three nominees for the party’s Presidential candidate.
