THE Helao Nafidi Town Council in the Ohangwena Region yesterday entered an agreement of co-operation with the People’s Government of Nantong Municipality of China.
The partnership outlines the implementation of development initiatives that will accelerate the quality of life for the residents of Helao Nafidi. The Mayor of Helao Nafidi, Medusalem Handjaba, said post-independent Namibia was characterised by a high incidence of poverty and budgetary constraints that militated against the needs of the people being met on time.”The huge income disparities and inequities further compound the problem and the per capita income of the country is not a true reflection of conditions on the ground,” said Handjaba.Helao Nafidi town was established in 2004.It covers various settlements and villages along the Ohangwena – Oshikango main road at Onhuno, Ohangwena, Omafo, Engela and Oshikango.Handjaba said the town had a huge demand for residential and business proposals but that a lack of available capital restricted open trading space and recreation facilities.”Taking into account this situation, we can no longer sit back and take a passive position in the development of our towns and the country’s economy at large and this prompted us to look for ways of creating development opportunities, hence the formation of this agreement,” said Handjaba. The areas identified under the negotiations include the development of agricultural and aquaculture projects, promotion of tourism and local economic development and the promotion of construction and manufacturing.
