ABOUT 189 girls from the Caprivi Senior Secondary School in the Zambezi region could be sent home due to the heavy rains that flooded their hostel block yesterday.
The school is one of the two institutions at Katima Mulilo which provide accommodation for pupils. There are about 1 230 pupils enrolled at the school.
School principal Richard Musilizo, who was inspecting the girls’ dormitories when visited the school yesterday, said this is an annual occurrence during the rainy season, and it disrupts learning.
“If the rain continues as predicted, we will have to send the girls back home as they cannot stay here in water. The side where the boys’ block is located is fine because it is on higher ground, but the girls’ hostel is on very low ground, where the water forms a pool,” he explained.
Musilizo thus appealed to the public to assist the school in improving its infrastructure as that would help them continue with lessons without any interruptions during the rainy season.
Grade 11 and Grade 12 teachers at the school, who did not want to be named, said lessons were interrupted as the girls were called to sweep the water out of the hostel blocks and secure their belongings.
