Heated debate in National Assembly over proposed committee amendments

A heated debate erupted in the National Assembly (NA) yesterday following a motion tabled by Swapo member Philipus Katamelo proposing the inclusion of 10 members to the selection committee on parliamentary procedures.

He suggested amendments to Rule 2 of the standing rules and orders.

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) member of parliament Inna Hengari questioned the move, suggesting it creates unequal representation of political parties.

She said the opposition parties were not well represented.

“There is no committee that can be constituted where the majority party is outnumbered by the minority,” Katamelo said.

The 10 selection comittee members will include the NA speaker, deputy speaker, the government chief whip, the official opposition and six other members chosen through proportional representation.

Opposition parties walked out of the chamber in disagreement with the suggested amendments.

They argued for the equal representation of all parties.
