Head of Zim’s RBZ gets death threats

HARARE – The head of Zimbabwe’s central bank, handpicked by President Robert Mugabe to lead the government’s anti-corruption drive, has received death threats from corrupt businessmen and politicians, a newspaper said yesterday.

Gideon Gono, the governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), was quoted by the private Standard weekly as saying he had received threats and needed personal security. “I have received serious death threats from corrupt bank managers, politicians and other company owners who were thriving from rampant corruption,” Gono told a meeting of business leaders last week.Even though his enemies wanted his “head on the platter”, this would not scuttle the bank’s policies, Gono added.Gono, who was appointed late last year, has become popular for leading an anti-corruption crusade which has seen the arrest of prominent Zimbabwean businessmen, including members of Mugabe’s ruling Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party.- Nampa-AFP”I have received serious death threats from corrupt bank managers, politicians and other company owners who were thriving from rampant corruption,” Gono told a meeting of business leaders last week.Even though his enemies wanted his “head on the platter”, this would not scuttle the bank’s policies, Gono added.Gono, who was appointed late last year, has become popular for leading an anti-corruption crusade which has seen the arrest of prominent Zimbabwean businessmen, including members of Mugabe’s ruling Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party.- Nampa-AFP
