Have The End In Mind

I can anticipate the thoughts of every man right now, particularly those between the ages of 25 and 35.

They are all strategising for December – envisioning a well-stocked cooler box, enjoying a fresh goat under a tree in the north, catching fish along the Atlantic Ocean, eating braai meat at the farm, or just enjoying a good time by the ocean.

I know December is the month of celebrations and get-togethers, but we need to keep the end in mind.

As men, we invest considerable time in organising our December festivities – saving up, procuring the necessary equipment and goods and ensuring all the details align.

However, when it comes to life goals or crafting five-year plans, we often fail in maintaining the same level of enthusiasm and commitment.

If I were to ask random guys about their December plans, eight out of 10 would have a ready response.

Yet, if I were to pose the question about their five-year plans, a notable silence would likely develop among the gentlemen.

We focus a lot on short-term plans and neglect long-term plans. What is important is striking a balance between the joyous festivities of the present and the strategic planning required for future success.

By embracing both aspects with equal enthusiasm, men can navigate the journey ahead with confidence and purpose.

Certainly, there are individuals who embrace the belief that life is too short, questioning the necessity of extensive investments in the future. However, it is imperative to recognise the significance of allocating resources to both the present and the future.

As mentioned previously, we may be aware of our plans for December, yet the crucial inquiry lies in our awareness of January’s arrangements.

Especially for parents: Have we adequately budgeted for essential items such as school fees, uniforms, and stationery?

It’s crucial to comprehend that the salary received in November caters to expenses in December, while the salary earned in December is designated for obligations in January.

This aspect often goes unnoticed by many and I consider it to be very important.

Some advice: Begin with the end in mind.

This a concept often associated with the idea of proactive behaviour and effective goal setting.

It comes from Stephen Covey’s book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’.

The idea is to start any task or project with a clear understanding of your ultimate goal or desired outcome. By having a clear vision of the end results, you can better plan and prioritise your actions to ensure they align with your objectives.

In a broader sense, having the end in mind could also refer to considering the long-term consequences or outcomes of your actions before you embark on a particular path. It emphasises the importance of strategic thinking, planning, and foresight in personal and professional endeavours.

I suggest carefully planning your December expenditures, avoiding unnecessary expenses.

Enjoy yourself responsibly.

Considering the challenges many men may have faced this year it is important to unwind.

Reflecting on Willie Nelson’s wisdom: “When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.”

Let’s shift our focus to the positives.

Embrace this mindset as we reflect on the past year and prepare for the opportunities ahead in the coming year.

Wishing all the gents a blissful festive season.
