Hardap Triathlon on the cards

ONE of the biggest events on the sport calendar in Namibia, the Hardap Triathlon – ITU Africa Cup annually held in Mariental, will take place on Saturday at the Hardap Dam.

MWeb Namibia recently seized the opportunity by joining the sponsorship table with an amount of N$43 000, propelling them to main sponsorship status. The south of Namibia becomes a hub of activity when tri-athletes from all corners of the world gather in Mariental, for the Hardap Triathlon. The General Manager of MWeb Namibia, Marc Gregan, himself a keen sportsman and supporter of several other extreme sport codes in Namibia, was quoted as saying: “Today’s youth are tomorrow’s decision makers.Being afforded this superb sponsorship opportunity gets us closer to our prospective markets.”The way of life has changed around the world. We realise that health and fitness play a vital role where MWeb Namibia can become strong in terms of association. We wish all the tri-athletes the best for the race”.The Hardap Triathlon has a rich and long-standing heritage in Namibia that spans over 20 years.According to the event organiser, Marieta Grobler, during the past four years, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) has come to recognise the event, ensuring the athletes exposure to international standards and qualifying criteria. The main differentiating factor of this event is that competitors from Europe, USA and Africa (including athletes from Morocco, Mauritius, Zimbabwe) will be racing against 120 athletes for the team and individual places.MWeb Namibia recently sponsored the International Speed Week event at the coast and this new addition to their sponsorship stable is in line with objectives of ensuring that they remain alongside Namibians that excel in their respective codes. As part of excitement during the event, world-class tri-athletes such as Hendrik de Villiers, ranked as the number one tri-athlete in Southern Africa, will be one of the competitors to watch out for.Race starts: 07h00 for the elite and 09h00 for age groups, both Canoe and Duathlon Categories: Olympic Distance: Elite Male and Female (1.5 km Swim; 40 km Cycle; 10 km Run) Olympic Distance: Age Group M/F (1.5 km Swim; 40 km Cycle; 10 km Run) Rookie Distance: M/F (500 m Swim; 20 km Cycle; 5 km Run) Canoe race: Duathlon M/F : (5 km Run; 40 km Cycle; 10 km Run) Rookie Duathlon: M/F 2,5 km Run; 20 km Cycle; 2.5 km Run Registration: Friday, October 5 at the Hardap Dam Namibia Wildlife Resorts Convention Centre. For more information, contact Marieta Grobler at (061) 290 9208 or e-mail: marietag@agra.com.naThe south of Namibia becomes a hub of activity when tri-athletes from all corners of the world gather in Mariental, for the Hardap Triathlon. As part of excitement during the event, world-class tri-athletes such as Hendrik de Villiers, ranked as the number one tri-athlete in Southern Africa, will be one of the competitors to watch out for.
