The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare and partners last week inaugurated four new classrooms and storage facilities worth N$1.4 million at Rietoog’s WJD Cloete Combined School.
The classrooms are aimed at strengthening access to education in the rural community in the Hardap region.
The infrastructure has been made possible through a partnership between Children in the Wilderness and IXM Metals.
Minister of gender equality and child welfare Emma Kantema officialy inaugurated the facilities last week.
She said the additional classrooms will reduce the need for pupils to travel long distances to towns such as Rehoboth or Mariental in search of education.
“We want to ensure that WJD Cloete Combined School grows. Our vision is to see this school having Grade 10, Grade 11 and even AS level in the future,” she said.
Hardap governor Rian McNab also welcomed the development, urging parents and communities to safeguard children from social challenges.
“As the governor, I don’t want to see an area in our country where there is mushrooming of drug outlets,” he said at the inauguration ceremony, stressing the importance of creating safe environments that allow children to focus on their education and future development.
The new infrastructure is expected to help accommodate the growing number of pupils at the school while improving storage capacity for educational materials.
