MARIENTAL – Under 20 soccer teams in the Hardap Region will start preparing for the annual The Namibian Newspaper Cup at constituency level this coming weekend.
The Namibian Newspaper Cup will take place in Swakopmund from 14 to 17 April.
The chairperson of the Hardap Region Football Association (HARFA), Michael Situde on Wednesday told Nampa trials will start in all eight constituencies under the supervision of the constituency councillors and regional executive representatives in the constituencies.
He said this year, they decided to involve as many players as possible to give them a chance to be part of the regional team.
“The regional executive has been assured by the Hardap Regional Council Chairperson and Rehoboth Urban East Constituency councillor Eduard Wambo that the trials to select an under 20 regional team will start at constituency level this coming weekend,” Situde said.
He added that all players born in 1998 and thereafter are invited to attend the trials in their respective constituencies.
All players who are selected at constituency level will then attend the regional trials that will be held from 3 to 4 March in Mariental.
“From there we will select 20 players to represent Hardap in Swakopmund,” he said.
Situde urged players to attend trials where they are based even if they are from another constituency within Hardap Region.
“If a player is from Mariental Rural and attends school in Rehoboth, he can join the trials at Rehoboth Urban East or Urban West. At the end of the day he is from Hardap,” he said.
Hardap finished as runners-up in the Newspaper Cup in 2004 and 2005 and then went one better to win the title in 2006 against their fiercest rivals and then host, //Kharas Region.
Since then, however, they have had little luck. – Nampa
