Hage Geingob High School Celebrates Independence Day

Just a day before Namibia’s 25th independence celebrations, Hage Geingob High School in Katutura pulled off a celebration under the theme ‘our culture, our heritage, Namibia our motherland’.

Established in 2002 and previously known as the Moses Garoeb Project School, the school transformed a year later into Hage Geingob High School and is named after Namibia’s third president, who is also the patron of the school.

The day featured performances by pupils entertaining the crowd with their patriotic presentations. One such performance was a debate under the motion ‘the government is doing enough’. Two teams tabled their contributions to the motion, providing very strong points for and against the motion.

An independence poem was narrated by a pupil explicating the significance of the day and detailing the country’s history.

The event was graced by wonderful traditional dances of the Kavango, Herero, Aawambo and Nama and Damara cultural groups.

The significance of the day was marked by teacher Hitanwa Josea who enriched pupils with a brief history of Namibia.

“Independence Day reminds me of the time our ancestors were killed for our freedom. Not only that, the day gives me a glimpse of where we come from,” said Linea Hasheni, a 16-year-old grade 10 pupil. For 15-year-old Grade 10 pupil Katrina Ishinga, the day means freedom in all ways. “I have the freedom to be whoever I want to be and I can express myself freely.”
