CONSTRUCTION of the N$6,4 million !Homs AI community open market at Keetmanshoop started on Tuesday afternoon.
In a message read by Industrial Development Director Steve Motinga, Trade and Industry Minister Hage Geingob said the construction of the market was part of his ministry’s site and premises development programme. ‘The objective of the programme is to provide trading and manufacturing space for the small and medium enterprise sector at affordable prices to produce goods and services, and in the process create jobs and reduce poverty,’ said Geingob.Citing the daunting challenge of unemployment the nation faces, Geingob urged regional, local and regional authorities to join the Trade and Industry Ministry in its endeavours to develop the SME sector. ‘I do not have to remind you today of unemployment in this country. I think you agree that its one of the most daunting challenges we face as nation. The development of the SME sector is one of the most effective ways for the creation of jobs,’ said Geingob. He added that SMEs also play an important role in innovation and the adoption and diffusion of new technology. ‘Despite all these, SMEs’ contribution to the gross domestic product is still relatively small. All our programmes must ultimately lead to a higher share of the contribution of SMEs and medium enterprises to our gross domestic product,’ said Geingob. The Keetmanshoop Town Council made land available for the construction of the open market.
