Greece wins Mini World Cup

GREECE, represented by St Paul’s College, won the Russell Bartlett Hockey Mini World Cup which was held for the 18th consecutive year over the weekend.

The tournament saw about 540 children from Windhoek, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay in action on the astroturf at Windhoek Gymnasium Private School on Friday and Saturday.

Each school represented a country, with boys and girls teams from under 10 to under 14 in action.

Greece were the overall winners with a total of 50 points, with Italy represented by Windhoek Gymnasium second on 42 and Germany, represented by St Georges, third on 31 points.

The other competing teams were Singapore (Walvis Bay Primary School), Scotland (Pro Ed from Swakopmund), Canada (Private School Swakopmund), Jamaica (M&H Academy), Holland (WAP) and Egypt (Pionierspark Primary School).

The ambassadorial trophy which is awarded to the team that best depicts their country in a cultural show, was won by Italy, while the Russell Bartlett Team Award for the best spirit and conduct was won by Canada.

Standard Bank Namibia announced a three-year sponsorship for the tournament, allocating N$100 000 for this year’s event, N$120 000 for next year and N$140 000 for 2021.

Shayne Cormack of the organisers K5 said the sponsorship will help them to expand the tournament.

“We are looking to branch out into the regions and the sponsorship from Standard Bank has provided a great platform to identify new talent. We are now at maximum capacity here in Windhoek, but we will try and launch the tournament outside Windhoek as well,” she said.
