Grant to soften blow of climate change

NAMIBIA has been given money to help rural communities cope with the impact of climate change.

The money is from the Global Environment Facility’s Strategic Priority Adaptation fund. Nickey Gaseb, the national co-ordinator for the GEF’s Small Grants Programme in Namibia, says the grant amounts to US$370 000.The programme is being implemented under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Namibia Nature Foundation.Gaseb says the programme will have to come up with a national strategy outlining the criteria for projects to be funded. The GEF is the funding mechanism for developing countries that have signed global environmental treaties such as the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, UN Convention on Combating Desertification and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.Namibia has signed all these conventions and is therefore eligible for funding.Nickey Gaseb, the national co-ordinator for the GEF’s Small Grants Programme in Namibia, says the grant amounts to US$370 000.The programme is being implemented under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Namibia Nature Foundation.Gaseb says the programme will have to come up with a national strategy outlining the criteria for projects to be funded. The GEF is the funding mechanism for developing countries that have signed global environmental treaties such as the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, UN Convention on Combating Desertification and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.Namibia has signed all these conventions and is therefore eligible for funding.
