Grade 10, 12 results out next week

MORE than 56 000 Grade 10 and almost 18 000 Grade 12 higher level candidates who sat for the 2018 national exams will be able to access their results shortly after midnight next Thursday, the ministry of education announced yesterday.

According to a statement released by the ministry yesterday morning, the results will be available on the websites of the ministry and that of the national examination directorate – www.moe.gov.na and www.dnea.gov.na. The results will also be accessible by sending an SMS to 2929, 99099 or 55755.

The ministry furthermore announced that Grade 12 ordinary level results will be released in January 2019.

According to the statement, 56 112 candidates – 44 890 full-time and 11 222 part-time candidates – sat for the Grade 10 Junior Secondary Certificate (JSC), while 17 968 – (16 932 and 1 036) – candidates sat for the Grade 12 higher level exams.

The ministry said this is a 10% increase in the number of candidates who sat for the exams last year.

Education minister Katrina Hanse-Himarwa earlier this year said 53 332 candidates sat for the national JSC examinations in 2017. Of these, 40 599 were full-time candidates, while 12 733 were part-time entrants. Out of 40 599 full-time candidates who sat for the Grade 10 examination, only 22 462 qualified for admission to Grade 11.

This represents 55,3% of pupils, compared to 21 291 (55,7%) recorded in 2016.

The ministry earlier this year also said 2017 recorded an increase in the pass rate at the JSC level, with 1 171 more candidates securing admission to Grade 11.

Hanse-Himarwa in January noted that the Grade 12 higher level results for 2017 indicated a lower sucess rate, with the graded entries dropping by 1,1% from the 95,5% recorded in 2016 to 94,4% for that year.

The minister further said 3 270 out of 16 949 pupils who failed Grade 10 in 2016 were allowed to repeat that grade in 2017.

earlier this year reported that pupils who fail Grade 10 will not repeat the grade, but will be pushed back to Grade 9 with the new curriculum that puts Grade 9 as the cut-off grade for the junior secondary certificate.

This came after the ministry established a national promotion policy guide for junior and secondary school phases released in March 2017. The guide saw a new curriculum being implemented for primary level and Grade 8 pupils.
