Govt says no to disrespectful gatherings in honour of Nujoma

Modestus Amutse

The government has discouraged Namibians from disrespectful, large gatherings in light of the mourning period for late founding president Sam Nujoma.

The mourning period started on Monday, 10 February.

Deputy minister of information and communication technology Modestus Amutse announced this in a press statement issued Monday evening.

“The government of Namibia would like to discourage the nation from large public gatherings and celebrations that could be deemed as disrespectful during the mourning period for Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, founding president and father of the Namibian nation,” he said.

Amutse, however, said the “continuation of service delivery, indoor gatherings” may be allowed.

The government also banned all sport activities across the country during the mourning period.

More information and developments will follow, he added.
