The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology has congratulated The Namibian, its founder Gwen Lister and the entire staff, for 40 years of “chronicling Namibia’s journey to independence and beyond”.
On behalf of the government the ministry says, for decades, The Namibian has been a vital pillar of Namibia’s democratic society; informing, educating, and entertaining generations of citizens while ‘fearlessly shining a light on matters of national interest.’
“Your unwavering commitment to principles of free, independent, and pluralistic media has not only empowered citizens but also strengthened our democracy.
As the ministry charged with the responsibility of overseeing information management and dissemination within Namibia, we applaud The Namibian for reaching this significant milestone,” the ministry noted in a statement on Monday.
It said the newspaper’s legacy is one of courage and resilience, testament to the power of the press in shaping an informed and engaged society.
“Your continued efforts to “tell it like it is” have served as a cornerstone in upholding transparency, accountability, and civic engagement. In an ever-evolving media landscape, your role remains more relevant than ever.
“On this momentous occasion, we commend your contributions and encourage you to continue striving for excellence, fairness, and impact in your reporting. Congratulations on this remarkable milestone,” the ministry said.
