The Namibia Meteorological Service on Tuesday issued a warning to the public on widespread thunderstorms that are forecasted to affect parts of northern-central and north-west Otjozondjupa, and the Khomas regions between 4 and 6 February.
According to chief forecaster operations at Namibia Meteorological Service, Odillo Kgobetsi, the severe weather is expected to bring flash floods in several areas, prompting urgent precautionary measures from government and local authorities.
He urges residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant.
“The Zambezi region regularly experiences flooding during the rainy season due to its proximity to the Zambezi River.
“The Kavango East and Kavango West regions are flood-prone due to the Kavango River and the flat terrain. The Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati, and Oshikoto regions (Cuvelai-Etosha Basin) are known for seasonal flooding and the presence of Oshana’s shallow, seasonal floodplains,” he says.
Kgobetsi warns the public of flash floods, thunderstorms, wetness, slippery roads and poor visibility.
“Avoid crossing flooded or fast-flowing waters and seek shelter indoors and steer clear of open areas, tall trees, and metal structures,” he says.
He further warns residents in these areas to be alert to the risk of overly wet structures such as houses and toilets collapsing.
Road users are warned to drive slowly on slippery roads and be cautious of poor visibility, and to keep cattle and other livestock in secure shelters.
