Governor launches environmental impact assessment at Bukalo

Zambezi governor Dorothy Kabula on Tuesday launched an environmental impact assessment for the development of 500 erven within the Bukalo Village Council’s boundaries.

In her remarks, Kabula said development and conservation are not mutually exclusive, and with proper planning, people can build bigger and better homes and businesses simultaneously.

The governor said the event marks an important step in sustainable urban development, land access inclusivity and environmental responsibility, noting that the exercise is not just a statutory requirement, but a moral obligation and a developmental imperative measure.

“The proposed development of 500 erven covers both existing and new residential, commercial and institutional plots. This bold and visionary initiative is commendable and reflects a deep balancing of our community needs and the protection of the environment,” she stated.

Kabula pointed out that people can develop infrastructure and still protect biodiversity.

“Let the environmental impact assessment be the foundation upon which we can build a greener and more prosperous Bukalo Village Council,” she said.

She further applauded the village council for all its ongoing capital projects, reaffirming the government’s unwavering support and commitment to uplifting the livelihoods of all Namibians.

Speaking at the same event, Bukalo Village Council chairperson Chuma Mudabeti said Bukalo will continue to work hard and ensure that it achieves town status in future, noting that these services are critical for supporting economic growth, residential development and maintaining a high standard of living.

“This exercise is conducted to evaluate potential environmental, social and economic impacts before any project approval. It is vital in getting input from the residents of Bukalo so that your concerns, needs and suggestions are considered in the assessment,” she said.

Bukalo was proclaimed a village in 2013.
