Gottlieb Pandeni appointed as new naval operations commander

Navy commander rear admiral Sacheus !Gonteb formally appointed rear admiral Gottlieb Pandeni as the new naval operations commander at the PN Sacharia naval base at Walvis Bay on Friday.

Pandeni takes over from Erastus Lazarus, who has held the position since November 2021 and has now been appointed as deputy navy commander.

Speaking at the ceremony, !Gonteb said the new commander brings wide operational experience and leadership to the post at a time when the navy continues to protect Namibia’s maritime interests.

“You are entrusted with the execution of critical operations, the stewardship of vital capabilities, and leadership that directly supports naval personnel across the Navy,” !Gonteb said.

He said the role is central to the running of the navy and the success of its missions.

Accepting the charge of authority, Pandeni said he was honoured by the confidence placed in him. He thanked the navy commander and paid tribute to the outgoing commander.

“I would like to thank rear admiral Lazarus for his leadership and dedication over the past years. I am grateful for the foundation he has laid,” he said.

Lazarus said the post comes with heavy responsibilities, but also great pride. He said he was confident that the navy’s fleet would continue to grow under the new leadership.

“I am confident that the fleet will remain in good hands under your command, and I have no doubt that you will continue to strengthen and modernise the fleet,” he said.

During his time in office, Lazarus led naval operations within Namibian waters and beyond, focusing on maritime security and the protection of national interests.

The navy said the change in leadership forms part of its efforts to strengthen operational readiness and improve the fleet’s performance.
