THE maiden Narib Annual Golden Spike series starts in Windhoek on Saturday, with the event’s brainchild Ernst Narib forecasting top performances from seasoned and budding athletics campaigners alike.
Among the leading lights to sign up for the first of the four-leg series are women’s current 100m national champion and 60m indoor national record holder Jolene Jacobs, while 400m national record holder Tjipekapora Herunga makes her first appearance on the national circuit after her return from Jamaica last year.
Former men’s 100m champion Dantago Gurirab will also be looking to stake a claim for honours with a good showing in the series opener, while Narib, himself a decorated sprinter, also racing in the 200m and 300m disciplines.
Top juniors like Sandro Diergaardt, the current national long jump champion, and high jumper Vizamuje Ujaha from Swakop Striders, will also be in action.
The first leg consists of the following disciplines: 60m, 100m, 150m, 200m, 300m, 800m, long jump, high jump and shot put.
The next two meets are also scheduled for Windhoek on 16 February and 20 April, with the final leg set for Swakopmund during the final weekend of April.
“We will have some of the top athletes taking part in the first Narib Annual Golden Spike Series this Saturday. There are also many youngsters who will be looking to make a name for themselves, so we expect some top competition from the athletes,” Narib said.
“I also spoke to the Windhoek Police Station commander to have police visibility at the event to ensure safety for those who will attend.”
Saturday’s programme runs from 09h00 to 12h45.
