THE Golden Boxing Club will stage a development boxing tournament at the Ella du Plessis High School in Khomasdal on Saturday.
The bouts will start at 16h00 and the entrance fee is N$10 per person. The club’s secretary general, Benjamin Rebang, says the event is being staged because there is a lack of competition in the country.”The other main purpose is for the boxers to sharpen their skills for international competitions, while it also evaluates the standards of the boxers and the coaching methods,” said Rebang. The Golden Boxing Club has been in existence for three years and, has achieved a lot in that period, according to Rebang. He said boxer Andreas ‘Kapapu’ Samuel was crowned 2006 featherweight champion at the Nedbank National Championship. He was also selected for the national team.Samuel fought his first international fight in Angola during that country’s Independence Day celebrations. He scooped the best boxer of the tournament award and also participated in the 2007 Zone Six Games in Botswana for the first time.He won a bronze medal at the Botswana championships.Another boxer, Jackson Nambinga, was awarded a bronze medal at the 2006 Nedbank Namibia National Championships.Out of the ring, Rebang and Dawid Utsile were awarded level-two coaching certificates by the International Olympic Committee. They were instructed by the experienced Brain Hedley from the United Kingdom, and also received training on sport administration through the Namibia National Olympic Committee. The course was presented by Quinton-Steele Botes and Daan Nel.The club’s secretary general, Benjamin Rebang, says the event is being staged because there is a lack of competition in the country.”The other main purpose is for the boxers to sharpen their skills for international competitions, while it also evaluates the standards of the boxers and the coaching methods,” said Rebang. The course was presented by Quinton-Steele Botes and Daan Nel.
