The second leg of the Gobabis Motocross (MX) National Championships on Saturday drew encouraging interest, with more riders turning up despite the long distances to the town.
Competitors travelled from Walvis Bay, Omaruru and Windhoek.
Organiser Ingo Waldschmidt says the event forms part of preparations for the MX of African Nations (MXoAN) scheduled for August.
Waldschmidt expresses gratitude to riders who made the effort to travel to Gobabis.
“We saw 46 entries (leg one in Windhoek saw 43 entries). It is an uptrend and it is good to see strong competition across all classes,” he says.
He notes that the 50cc class showed notable improvement, with five entries compared to only one during the opening leg held in February at the Gallina MX event.
The 65cc and 85cc categories also recorded increased participation.
The 125cc and veterans’ classes delivered competitive racing.
However, the Clubmans class – typically a favourite among riders and spectators – drew no entries.
“We had no entries for this class and this is worrisome,” Waldschmidt added.
The track was prepared by Dewald Venter and his team, contributing to a well-organised event.
Gobabis remains one of the local tracks that riders enjoy racing on.
“I think we are on a good MX road for the future, and it shows the riders are ready to make the effort for the upcoming MXoAN,” Waldschmidt says.
The next event is slated for 18 April, with indications that at least two South African riders will travel to Namibia as part of their preparations for the August competition.
Three riders suffered minor falls, but no serious injuries were reported.
