Global United line-up completed

The list of players for the FNB Global United Namibia match has been finalised, the organisers announced on Monday.

Namibia will have two representatives on the team in Oliver Risser and Lolo Goraseb.

Among those expected to arrive in Namibia for the match, which will be played in Outjo on 28 March, are former Germany internationals Fredi Bobic, Andreas Görlitz and Jörg Heinrich – a Uefa Champions League winner with Borussia Dortmund 1997.

Compatriots Lothar Sippel and Martin Driller, who were never capped at senior level, are also in the team.

Also in the side are former Bafana Bafana stalwarts Macbeth Sibaya and Bradley Carnell, who is currently a football pundit on SuperSport, as well as compatriot Sean Dundee, who once turned out for English Premier League giants Liverpool in the mid-1990s.

Former Netherlands youth international Geert Brusselers, and retired Swedish midfielder Stefan Schwarz, who featured for Arsenal, Valencia in Spain’s La Liga and Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga will be part of the match.

Founder and president of Global United Lutz Pfannenstiel, a retired goalkeeper who has been capped by Germany at youth level, completes the side.

Pfannenstiel is the only player to have played professionally in all six Fifa confederations. The visitors are expected to arrive in Windhoek on 24 March.

Bobic, who doubles up as chairman of the supervisory board of Global United and who until recently was manager of German Bundesliga outfit VfB Stuttgart, said he was looking forward to being part of the event again this year.

“I recall the friendliness and openness of the Namibians from my last visit and mostly enjoyed the atmosphere at the match and the visit in Katutura,” he said.

“When considering environmental issues in Namibia he adds that all existing initiatives in Namibia need to be recognised and encouraged to continue their good work. That is why we insist in involving local people and organisations so that they can be supported in the great work they are doing,” Bobic added.

Swartz too is keen on playing in Namibia again.

“I am delighted to come back to one of my favourite countries. I hope we will have a great event and make even more people aware of the future of environmental challenges,” Swartz said.

He added that Namibia was in a good place with regards to conserving its environment and cleanliness and should be an example for many other countries.

“I hope we can continue creating awareness all over. Namibia is such a beautiful country with lovely people and it should be preserved in all aspects for many generations to come,” he said.
