“I believe in being unapologetically myself, and that’s what sets me apart in the fashion industry,” says the Namibia-born model Johanna Swartbooi.
And she’s not wrong. With her breathtaking looks, remarkable talent and unwavering determination, Swartbooi has made a name for herself in the cut-throat world of modelling, captivating audiences and leaving a trail of admirers wherever she goes.
For Swartbooi, who hails from Keetmanshoop, the journey to the top of the fashion industry has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Growing up at Vaalgras, a remote village in southern Namibia, the 25-year-old Swartbooi says she developed a love for fashion and modelling from a young age.
“I always knew I wanted to be a model. I used to put on fashion shows for my family and friends, strutting my stuff on improvised runways,” recalls Swartbooi, with a nostalgic twinkle in her eye.
But it was not until she took the leap of faith and pursued her modelling dream that Swartbooi’s career took off.
“I left Namibia and travelled to Europe with just a suitcase full of dreams and determination,” she says. “It wasn’t easy, but I was willing to work hard and never give up on my passion.”
And work hard she did.
Swartbooi’s talent and dedication soon caught the attention of top modelling agencies in Hamburg, Berlin and Milan, propelling her to the forefront of the fashion scene. With her striking looks, flawless skin and fierce catwalk gait, she became a sought-after model, gracing the pages of high-fashion magazines and strutting her stuff on prestigious runways around the world.
“I believe that diversity is the essence of true beauty,” Swartbooi explains. “As a black African model, I take pride in representing my culture and heritage in the fashion industry. It’s important to me to inspire aspiring models of African descent and show them that they can achieve their dreams too.”
Apart from her stunning looks, what sets Swartbooi apart is her fierce determination and entrepreneurial spirit. Besides her successful modelling career, she is also a model consultant, chief executive officer and creative director of her fashion brand, ‘‡Nu/Gôa,’ which celebrates African fashion and promotes sustainability.
“I’ve always been passionate about fashion and its potential to tell a story,” Swartbooi says. “With ‡Nu/Gôa, I wanted to create a brand that reflects my African heritage and promotes sustainability. I believe fashion can be a force for positive change, and I’m committed to making a difference in the industry.”
With her innovative and forward-thinking approach to fashion, Swartbooi has been a trailblazer in the industry, earning recognition for her work and inspiring others along the way.
“I want to be remembered as a game-changer, someone who pushed the boundaries and made a difference,” she says. “I’m here to leave my mark and make my voice heard.”
As she continues to make waves in the fashion world, Swartbooi remains true to herself, staying grounded in her Namibian roots and using her platform to empower others.
“My journey has been challenging, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding,” she says. “I’ve learnt that success is not just about achieving your goals, but also about staying true to who you are and using your success to make a positive impact.”
In the ever-evolving world of fashion, Swartbooi is a shining example of resilience, talent and unwavering determination. As she continues to make her mark on the global fashion stage, Swartbooi remains a trailblazer, embodying glamour and grit, and bound to leave an indelible impact on the world of fashion for years to come.
