Get Rich Quick – Or Try Trying

ALLOW me some space in your esteemed daily to give vent to my feelings. It is no surprise that NBC is in the spotlight again, in the midst of a scandal.

I have always said it: in Namibia we need to appoint people in top positions, especially at parastatals, on competence-related merits, with a proven track record. Some CEOs are in the job for the money, so that they can lay their hands on more money for the entities they run. They want to get rick quickly, they are greedy. The very people who have most benefits are the ones who are involved in embezzlement and all sorts of irregularities. They earn very hefty salaries and still crave more.We heard a story of a signature at Nampower – exceeding one’s signing powers; and now we hear of something at the NBC where the CEO bestowed upon himself sole signing rights, and if this is true, something is wrong in Namibia. This country has become one of a few countries in Africa where some people in top positions swindle funds to their own advantage and little happens to hold them accused and convicted.A lot of us want to get rich quick or we die trying. The director of the Anti Corruption Commission has a delicate job ahead of him, he will have to limit his associations to conquer the battle or else he will simply be an accessory himself. In Namibia corruption seems to be across all organs of the state. It is practised by virtually everybody, experience has taught Namibians this.NBC is not the only issue here – there’s also NDF, ODC, SSC to name a few. This tendency does not stop because some are seemingly left to walk free, for some reasons, whether it is because of politics or class etc. Those who are loyal to Swapo or to some political figures are normally appointed to top positions in the public or private sector but they hardly perform; all you hear after a year or so is that millions are unaccounted for.It seems corruption is breeding in the Swapo party .The truth is corruption goes with power. Those in power are the ones who usually practice corruption.Lay Analyst, Via e-mailSome CEOs are in the job for the money, so that they can lay their hands on more money for the entities they run. Those in power are the ones who usually practice corruption.Lay Analyst, Via e-mail
