LOCAL traditional reggae artist, ‘Gerry Dread’, has introduced his first 15-track album, ‘Rasta Kwaterera’ (meaning, ‘Rasta stand firm’).
The album consists of two traditional tracks, as well as a mix of Reggae and a Namibian jazz/soul song. There are also some instrumental tracks.Dread says that the objective of the album is to encourage the listener to remember morality in what he describes as a corrupt society.’There is a lot of confusion in the world – even in the young people – not sticking to education and the things that matter, but rather wanting to enjoy the glitz and gold of party life and immorality,’ he said. Also, in ‘Tjava Nawa’, the first track, Dread warns people to be careful when choosing their friends because ‘a close friend could become a dangerous enemy too’.’Prepare to Zion’ and ‘Zion Route’ are his call to people to ‘leave behind the wickedness and follow righteousness and truth’.According to Dread, this is an inspirational album that will lift up the spirits of the people who seek ‘that which is good and right’.Dread says that the music is skilled and not synthesised. ‘It’s skill in practice and therefore the music is very valuable. It’s the real thing, by real people,’ he said.Garry Dread will be participating in the Namibian Music Awards later this year in the reggae category. Copies of the CD are available in music stores at Windhoek, Swakopmund, Rundu and Ongwediva.
