Germany, EU extend Namibia’s climate resilience project

Germany has extending funding for a five-year environmental protection project in Namibia.

Scheduled to end in March, the extension adds three years to the project.

The Climate Change and Inclusive Use of Natural Resources (CCIU) project is funded by the German International Cooperation Society (GIZ) and was planned to run from 2021 to 2024.

However, country director of the German Development Bank Beatrice Lucke told The Namibian about the project’s extension at the event celebrating 35 years of German-Namibia development cooperation, held in Windhoek last week.
The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism.

The CCIU project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development with co-funding from the European Union (EU).

The rationale behind the project is that half of Namibians live in rural areas and depend on natural resources for their livelihoods.

However, these resources are under increasing pressure due to the negative impacts of climate change.

To promote a climate-adapted, resilient and equitable management of natural resources, Namibia has established its Nationally Determined Contributions – the efforts Namibia will take to address climate change – under the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change and has set out to revive its Community-Based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM) approach and improve coordination among its stakeholders.

The CCIU project aims to increase resilience of local communities and help preserve Namibia’s unique wildlife for future generations, targeting 230 000 people living in 86 communal conservancies and community forests, as well as available households in peri-urban areas.

The project focuses on four key areas: improving good governance standards in organisations involved in CBNRM; providing services to enhance equitable valuation of natural resources and to diversify livelihoods; strengthening the institutional capacities of ministry staff; and supporting the updating of the Nationally Determined Contributions partnership plan.
