Germany, Austria are fistball youth champs

AN exciting Under-18 Fistball Youth World Cup drew to a close on Sunday with Germany’s men and Austria’s women teams winning the respective categories.

The final between Germany and Switzerland was played in front of a large crowd of approximately 1 000 people at the SFC Sports Fields in Swakopmund.
It turned out to be a close affair played over five sets. Germany managed to take the first set narrowly beating the Swiss 15-14.
The Swiss retaliated taking the next two sets in spectacular fashion by 9-11 and 9-11. The fourth set turned out to be a close affair and Germany narrowly kept the upper hand by 12-10.
The Germans then showed their class in the final set, convincingly winning by 11-4.
Namibia finished sixth in a group of six participating countries.
After beating Chile in the preliminary round they were not able to repeat this performance when it really mattered. Namibia lost the play-off for fifth and sixth place narrowly by 3-2.
The final between Austria was a one-way affair with the first set going to Austria by a margin of nine points.
Only the second set went down to the wire with Austria keeping the upper hand and winning by 15-14.
In the third and decisive set, Austria kept their nerve and managed a score line of 11-8 in their favour.
Namibia finished last in the group of five participating nations. The inexperienced and young side did not stand a chance against the well-established fistball-playing nations.
The full results were as follows:
Men – 1. Germany, 2. Switzerland, 3. Brazil, 4. Austria, 5. Chile, 6. Namibia.
Women – 1. Austria, 2. Germany, 3. Switzerland, 4. Brazil, 5. Namibia.
