A group of 18 pupils and their three teachers from Gesamtschule Quelle school in Bielefeld, Germany are currently visiting Namibia on an exchange programme in collaboration with the Ella du Plessis Secondary School in Windhoek.
Ella Du Plessis is a partner school of the German school and thus a group of different pupils comes to Namibia once every two years to share ideas with the partner school and also to render the necessary assistance in terms of language and curriculum development.
Walter Scherer, a teacher at Gesamtschule Quelle, says they have previously done sight restoration for 27 pupils at the schools and are currently assisting a further 115 pupils at the school.
The group is currently working on improving the dilapidated state of the German classrooms at the school and aims to make the classes a conducive learning environment.
The group also does volunteer work at Monica’s Soup Kitchen in Goreangab.
Sophie Bannasch, a 17-year-old pupil, said it was quite a cultural shock for her as poverty is a rare sight in Germany. “Children in Germany don’t go around asking for food. It has really humbled me.”
The group visited The Namibian on Tuesday, 10 March, and were given a familiarisation tour of the company.
They were also given presentations by The Namibian’s staff and were also able to visit WordPress in the Northern Industrial area.
WordPress is the company responsible for printing the newspaper and the pupils all showed enthusiasm in the making of the newspaper.
