Genocide talks should not be rushed: Schlaga

GERMANY’S outgoing ambassador to Namibia Christian-Matthias Schlaga has cautioned the two governments not to rush the genocide discussions for the desired outcomes to be achieved.

The outcomes include acknowledgment, an apology and reparation from Germany for OvaHerero and Nama people.

Schlaga made these remarks at State House in an interview with the media after he bid president Hage Geingob farewell on Tuesday.

The genocide took place under the command of German general Lothar von Trotha. It is estimated that up to 100 000 Ovaherero and 10 000 Nama people died.

Schlaga said the discussion is vital and should not be rushed, adding that more time should be considered if needed.

He noted that the two governments have since 2015 had eight meetings to discuss the matter but were unable to reach a conclusion due to the complexity of the matter, particularly on the Namibian side.

“However we have moved forward towards the objective of defining political declarations which will cover all the issues,” he noted.

“We have to continue working in order to close this matter, which will open up many avenues for further cooperation between our governments. We would like to take the past consideration and look forward to develop a strong relationship in all affairs,” the outgoing ambassador stressed.

Schlaga will leave Namibia on Friday after serving as Germany’s ambassador to Namibia since 15 July 2016.
