THE Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) has accused Swapo Party vice president Hage Geingob of inciting political assassination.
A statement issued by RDP Secretary General Jesaya Nyamu objected to Geingob’s remark at a Swapo Rally at Lüderitz on Sunday that ”the moment Savimbi (Unita rebel leader Jonas Savimbi) died, there was peace in Angola”.At the same rally Geingob claimed that ‘some people’ in Namibia suffer from a ‘Savimbi syndrome’ because they want to become President. ‘It is sad that Mr Geingob, himself a former candidate for the Swapo dungeons in Lubango, is trying to raise his status in Swapo by resorting to irresponsible statements such as this one,’ the RDP said. ‘Mr Geingob and others who think like him must realise that the elimination of political figures, or just the attempt [to do so] would lead to civil confrontation in which he and his likes would be affected,’ the RDP statement reads. The RDP demanded that Geingob unconditionally withdraw the remarks. ‘What Geingob may have forgotten is that Savimbi and his Unita terrorist outfit was created by Swapo and others to fight the MPLA in the early sixties,’ the RDP statement claimed. ‘Swapo provided Unita with military training and logistic support including uniforms, guns and ammunition. Unita’s first field commanders were trained in China under the cover of Swapo or as Swapo members,’ the statement further reads. luqman@namibian.com.na
