Gatti stops Denmark’s Damgaard

ATLANTIC CITY – Arturo Gatti, who had to overcome an injury to his right hand, recorded an 11th-round technical knockout of Denmark’s Thomas Damgaard on Saturday at Boardwalk Hall.

In his first fight since being embarrassed by Floyd Mayweather seven months ago, Gatti (40-7, 31 KOs) was active the entire night and returned to his brawling ways of the past to spoil Damgaard’s first bout on North American soil. Gatti has dealt with injuries to his right hand in the past. But continued on despite the pain, did so again with the New Jersey crowd chanting his name the entire night.”It (hand) just feels like it’s broken,” said Gatti, who grew up in Montreal but now lives in New Jersey.”It may have more to do with the ligaments.I hurt it in the fourth round.”Gatti actually ended the fight with a right hand that wobbled Damgaard (37-1) before referee Lindsey Page stepped in and called a stop to the welterweight bout at the 2:54 mark of the 11th round. The 33-year-old Gatti used Damgaard as a punching bag for much of the bout, bloodying the Dane’s nose and eye.- Nampa-AFPGatti has dealt with injuries to his right hand in the past. The 33-year-old Gatti used Damgaard as a punching bag for much of the bout, bloodying the Dane’s nose and eye.- Nampa-AFP
