Frenzied panga attack ‘sparked by N$100’

A 58-year-old woman, Meschtilde Martin, is in a serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the Oshakati State Hospital after her son allegedly attacked her with a panga.

Regional Police Commander Josef Anghuwo told The Namibian that the attack was apparently prompted by the woman’s refusal to hand over N$100 that her son had given to her for safekeeping. The Police at Oshakati and Ondangwa are investigating the attack which took place at Ehafo village near Ondangwa on Saturday night.Martin’s 28-year-old son is alleged to have hacked his mother all over her body with the panga. He allegedly also set two huts on fire before fleeing.Police spokesperson Constable Christina Fonsech said yesterday that the Police were still looking for the suspect. She said Ehafo village is surrounded by oshanas full of water and the Police vehicles that went to search for the suspect became stuck in the mud on Sunday.”We are still looking for ways to arrest him, but it is difficult because of much water in that area,” Fonsech said.
