It’s award season again and Free Your Mind will pay homage to those Namibians who made us laugh, cry and shake our heads in amusement and amazement.
The team that brings you the ever popular standup comedy show every month will host the Celebrity Shake Down, ‘Arts for Life Awards’. Popyeni Kaxuxwena, of Free Your Mind describes the awards as a Namibian version of the Razzie awards, in the USA. “Since Free Your Mind is comedy, these awards are just another way to poke fun at the entertainment industry,” he said.
It will not be your average awards. With categories like ‘Xelebrity of the Year’ and ‘Namlish Promoter of the Year’, the awards show promises to poke fun of Namibian pop culture and will no doubt be the most humorous award show to be hosted in Namibia.
Since comedians are not recognised at the annual Film and Theatre Awards, The Free Your Mind Arts for Life Awards, which is set to become an annual event, will also give the opportunity for a comedian to walk away with an awards in the ‘Namibian Comedian of the Year’ category.
“It is important for us to award our comedians because they unfortunately do not get the recognition they deserve,” says Popyeni who points out that not only Free Your Mind comedians can walk away with this award, but any Namibian comedian.
The Free Your Arts for Life Awards, will also look to award individuals from different genres in entertainment with the four categories, which will include the more serious category of ‘Greatest Contributor to the Arts’. “This award will go to someone who has contributed greatly to the arts industry of Namibia,” said Popyeni.
On the night, audiences can look forward to seeing their favourite celebrities at the event, which will have enough doses of standup comedy. From the 16 Free Your Mind comedians, four will take the stage between the presentations of the awards to do what they do best, that is keep the crowd in stitches, so that comedy will still be the main entertainment on the night.
And to make the evening even more amazing, The Dogg will be performing live, accompanied on stage by a full band.
Voting for category winners can be done through the Free Your Mind social network pages. According to Popyeni, there are three nominees in each category except for the ‘Greatest Contributor to the Arts’ category.
“We have already identified someone, who we feel has dedicated a great deal to the arts in Namibia, for this award,” he said.
Besides a Free Your Mind trophy, the winner in each category will also walk away with a Mi-Phone, which is the first African mobile device brand. The phones will come with two Free Your Mind videos and other Free Your Mind content.
The red carpet event will take place at the Warehouse Theatre on Thursday, 7 November at 19h30 for 20h00. Tickets are available at CompuTicket for N$70 or alternatively for N$100 at the door.
