“This is no longer just a brand owned by a girl with passion and a dream in her Windhoek West living room,” says Namibian model and fashion designer Georgina Kandjeke, known popularly as Foxy Ginnah.
She is in the midst of expanding her brand, starting with packing up her life just over two months ago and moving herself and her business to Johannesburg, South Africa. She says being away from her four-year-old daughter has been difficult, but she finds solace in knowing this will one day be to her benefit.
“Right now my emotions are all over the place, but that’s granted when you’re away from home so long. I miss my family and friends but I know I’ll see them soon, so it’s helping to centre me,” she says. “I’m doing well, just emotional considering the amount of events that have happened in such a short time. I’m trying to ground myself by focusing on work.”
Kandjeke shut down studio operations earlier this year and relocated to spread her wings and relaunch her clothing brand.
Foxxy by FoxyGinnah is a line of high-end formal and ready-to-wear garments that was founded in 2017 and showcased at the Windhoek Fashion Week multiple years in a row.
The designer is known for her bold creations and trend-setting concepts worn by celebrities, public figures and industry leaders, while she is a Namibian fashion icon in her own right.
This new chapter in her story will come to life at the end of this month with invite-only launches in Windhoek and Johannesburg. From then on, the Namibian branch will only be for measurements and fittings.
Soon, she plans to expand operations to Ghana and Nigeria, and later to Botswana and Malawi.
She credits her supporters back home for the position she now finds herself in.
“I’m grateful to everyone that supports me in Namibia because I wouldn’t be where I’m right now if they didn’t believe in me. Namibia made me,” she said.
REBRAND
Expect the release of around 10 new winter looks that will be available for purchase on her online store. A dedicated team of tailors and creatives will handle production, though Kandjeke assures that she will have a hand in every item that comes out.
“This launch will definitely be focusing more on quality than quantity,” says the artisan, who is keen on having a team that can help push her garments to a more international standard. This will include assistance with pattern cutting and tailoring, as well as some management functions.
Kandjeke adds that this launch would serve as an introduction of what her rebrand will offer. She confirms that her designs will change only slightly.
“My designs are based solely on what influences me fashionably. Those influences keep changing with age and the environment, so the design style will definitely evolve. Either way, you will still be able to tell it’s authentically Foxxy because there’s something that you can’t change completely and it’s the aura of the designs,” she says.
Fans will be able to follow along on social media as she enters this new phase where she hopes to do “better” than she’s done previously.
“I’ve always pictured myself going big, very big. I’m talking beyond-Africa big. And I know now that I made the right choice because I finally got people to invest in Foxxy and that’s the beginning of bigger things to come,” she says.
