Former Swakopmund Mayor Kamho dies

DANIEL Hangula Kamho, former Mayor and member of the Swakopmund Town Council Management Committee, died at his home at the resort town yesterday morning.

PRO of the Swakopmund Municipality, Freddy Kaukungua, said Kamho (54) had suffered from a long illness. He never fully recovered from a brain tumour operation which he underwent in 2001.Described as a “much loved person”, Kamho was elected Mayor of Swakopmund in 1992 – a position he held until 1998.He was replaced as Mayor for one year by Samuel Nuuyoma, current Governor of the Erongo Region.In 1999 Kamho was elected again as Mayor.He did not stand for re-election in 2003 and was replaced by the first female Mayor of Swakopmund, Rosina //Hoabes.He remained as a Councillor and member of the Management Committee until his death.He was re-elected to the Management Committee on Friday.Kamho also served as Swapo Regional Organiser for Erongo until 1992.Governor Nuuyoma yesterday described Kamho as “a courageous person who did a lot for Swakopmund”.”We will miss him,” said the Governor.No funeral arrangements had been made by yesterday afternoon.Kaukungua said the vacancy left by Kamho in the Swakopmund Municipality will be filled by the next person next on the Swapo Party list: Cleopas Ngwena, Regional Organiser of the Namibia Food and Allied Workers Union (Nafau).He never fully recovered from a brain tumour operation which he underwent in 2001.
