Former Robben Island prisoner !Guiteb to be laid to rest on Saturday

Former Robben Island prisoner Lazarus !Guiteb will be laid to rest at Otjiwarongo on Saturday.

!Guiteb, who is recognised as a veteran of the liberation struggle, died on 16 July aged 83.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology on Monday describes him as a freedom fighter who was arrested, trialled and sentenced after the maiden battle between the South West Africa Liberation Army and South African forces at Omugulugwombashe on 26 August 1966.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has granted !Guiteb a state funeral with military honours.

He was, however, accorded a military funeral after the state announced there would be no more official funerals until the current criteria has been reviewed.

“However, the president may accord individuals during the same period, depending on the circumstances as stipulated by Article 32(3)(h) of the Namibian Constitution on the powers of the president granted under the National Honours Act of 2012,” the press release says.
