Former Cabinet minister Kawana urges Zambezi youth to attend Heroes Day commemoration

Former minister of home affairs, immigration, safety and security Albert Kawana has called on Zambezi youth to attend the Heroes Day commemoration at Katima Mulilo Sport Complex on Tuesday.

Kawana on Monday said young people are the future leaders and need to know their history – like that of 26 August 1966 – when the first bullet for the liberation struggle was fired at Omugulugwombashe in the Omusati region.

The youth of Zambezi and Namibia at large will properly know where they are heading if they know where they are coming from; therefore, attending the Heroes Day commemoration is another way of preparing them for the future, he said.

“I want to strongly call on them to refrain from drugs and alcohol abuse and instead become disciplined, good leaders and people of endurance,” he said.

The former minister is a recognised war veteran and supports the smooth transition of power to political leadership positions, saying smooth succession should continue in Namibia for long-lasting peace and stability.

Heroes Day preparations at Katima Mulilo are at an advanced stage, and about 20 000 people across the country are expected to attend the event.

Transport to collect and drop off local people at various pick-up points has been arranged.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will deliver the keynote address.
