Taking a trip to a distant land does not always entail getting on a plane and finding yourself in that location. Granted it would be much better and we often need an escape, but sometimes your kitchen can be the best airport and hotel all rolled into one.
My love for Southeast Asian cuisine goes without saying. Mine is a tale of how this exotic cuisine is not merely finding its way onto our plates but also seamlessly blending with Namibia’s culinary identity.
In recent years, there’s been a delightful shift in Namibia’s culinary scene, with Southeast Asian cuisine taking centre stage. From the fiery streets of Bangkok, to the aromatic stalls of Hanoi, the flavours of Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and beyond have found a welcoming home in the heart of Windhoek and beyond.
What’s causing this delightful invasion, you ask? Well, it’s a combination of global food trends, culinary exploration and a collective craving for something new and exciting.
Cassa Thai, Seoul Food, Indolicious and Moro Noodle bar are some great spots around Windhoek, along with Cai Tai Tai at Swakopmund, where you can stuff yourself with some great cuisine.
In addition, most leading restaurants have one or two items on the menu that will give you an idea of what Southeast Asian cuisine is like. Stratos at Avani comes to mind, as does Stellenbosch Tasting Room.
One might wonder, how does Southeast Asian cuisine adapt to the unique palate of Namibia? The secret lies in the thoughtful integration of local ingredients, creating a culinary harmony that’s both exciting and comforting.
The magic happens when Southeast Asian-inspired dishes not only use local ingredients but also pay homage to the diverse culinary identity of Namibia. It’s a dance of flavours that tells a story of unity, diversity and the joy of exploration. Southeast Asian cuisine, with its bold spices and aromatic herbs, meets the rugged elegance of Namibian produce.
WILD SPINACH PAD THAI
Take a trip to Thailand without leaving Namibia, with a unique twist on the classic Pad Thai. Swap the traditional bean sprouts with locally foraged wild spinach or kale, adding a touch of earthiness to the dish. The result is a harmonious balance of Thai street food with the untamed flavours of the Namibian wilderness.
KALAHARI MANGO STICKY RICE
Southeast Asia is renowned for its sweet endings, and Namibia’s contribution to this culinary adventure comes in the form of the luscious Kalahari mango. Imagine a sticky rice dessert bathed in a decadent coconut milk sauce, topped with ripe Kalahari mango slices. It’s a dessert that captures the essence of both regions in a single, heavenly bite. Add a bit of Amarula to make it more adult-centred.
Namibian Game Satay Skewers/Strip
Picture this: succulent skewers of Namibian game meat marinated in a luscious blend of Southeast Asian spices, then grilled to perfection. The result? A tantalising fusion of local game meat with the bold flavours of satay that leaves your taste buds dancing in delight. It’s a perfect example of how Namibian ingredients can seamlessly mix with the heart and soul of Southeast Asian cuisine.
Ingredients:
- Namibian game meat, cut into cubes
- Satay marinade (mix of soy sauce, lemongrass, garlic and chili)
- Skewers
Instructions:
- Marinate the game in the satay marinade for at least two hours.
- Thread the marinated game onto skewers.
- Grill the skewers until the game is cooked to your liking.
- Serve with a side of peanut sauce for dipping.
- Alternatively, cut your meat into strips and serve over rice with vegetables, plus an egg as the image shows.
As Southeast Asian cuisine continues to weave its way into Namibia’s food culture, it’s not just about adopting foreign flavours; it’s about celebrating the diversity of our local produce. It’s about creating dishes that tell stories, bridge cultures and make every meal an adventure.
