One of the men charged in the Fishrot corruption case, Ricardo Gustavo, has been moved from the prison cells and is being isolated in Windhoek for medical reasons.
He is at the Khomas medical practice at Auas Hills.
The commissioner general of the Namibian Correctional Service (NCS), Raphael Hamunyela, confirmed the matter.
"The information you have is correct, I understand he was taken there for an operation on 28 July 2021, but I am waiting to hear more information on the nature of this operation from the doctors," Hamunyela said.
Gustavo (45), a former Investec Asset Management Namibia client director, has been in police custody for over a year, following his arrest on 27 November 2019.
He is being charged with former fisheries minister Bernhard Esau, ex-minister of justice Sacky Shanghala, former Investec Namibia managing director James Hatuikulipi and Tamson Hatuikulipi, who is Esau’s son-in-law, for fraud, bribery, money laundering and conspiring to commit corruption.
These charges are in connection with allegations that they were involved in a scheme to corruptly benefit financially from the allocation of Namibian fishing quotas to the company Namgomar Pesca Namibia, of which Gustavo was the sole director.
