First Lady impressed by women’s projects

RUNDU – The Namibian First Lady Penexupifo Pohamba on Saturday praised the commitment and hard work of Namibian women in establishing self-help projects.

She made these remarks during a two-day visit to the Kavango region, saying the tireless efforts of many Namibian women have led to the establishment of various community-based projects that are complementing Government endeavours to uplift communities. The First Lady, who visited some community-based projects in the Kapako, Kahenge, Mpungu and Rundu Urban Constituencies, said some women in the Kavango Region started setting up projects before Independence. She said some of these projects, like the Kauvi Sewing Project, had grown since Independence and were based on strong business principles.Mrs Pohamba called on Namibian women, especially those in rural areas, to take the lead in development projects to improve their standard of living. She said although a few women had taken centre stage in society, the position of the majority of women still left a lot to be desired. Therefore, the establishment of women’s self-help projects in the Kavango Region was a step towards achieving the Government’s goal of gender equality, she said.Pohamba said it was only through useful initiatives aimed at starting up community-based projects and other business ventures that Namibian women could be empowered to achieve equality.- NampaThe First Lady, who visited some community-based projects in the Kapako, Kahenge, Mpungu and Rundu Urban Constituencies, said some women in the Kavango Region started setting up projects before Independence. Therefore, the establishment of women’s self-help projects in the Kavango Region was a step towards achieving the Government’s goal of gender equality, she said.Pohamba said it was only through useful initiatives aimed at starting up community-based projects and other business ventures that Namibian women could be empowered to achieve equality.- Nampa
