Fired up, doing it and raring to go at 24

SHE is busy supervising staff while making sure everything is in order and that clients are satisfied with the end result.

As the owner of two beauty salons in Katutura; one in Wanaheda and the other in Okuryangava; Twapewa Mudjanima is kept on her toes all the time to ensure that business goes well. Running two beauty salons and managing a staff compliment of 13 is a demanding task and not a small thing especially if you are aged only 24! Mudjanima started her business trading as Expressions Hair and Beauty Salons, fours years ago while simultaneously completing her studies at the University of Namibia from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.While others her age were thinking of what to do after completing their studies, Mudjanima who has always had a passion for beauty salons, had already set her sights on being an entrepreneur.The diligent Mudjanima is currently studying for an MBA in International Marketing, and she believes this all the education she is acquiring will boost her entrepreneurial skills and also benefit her business tremendously.”The idea of working for someone else never appealed to me – not that there is anything wrong with that but that’s not me.I have always had a desire to do my own thing and succeed at it,” she said.Starting the business, said Mudjanima, was a great challenge but adding that although the road was little bumpy, support from family and friends always pushed her through and with determination she was sooner rather than later, up and running.Mudjanima said she fell in love with beauty at a tender age and that during her school holidays while learning at Centaurus, she would spend them doing people’s hair in different salons.Expressions Hair and Beauty Salons, specialise in hairdressing, nail treatments, massages, facials and all the works that makes one feel good about oneself.Hair and body products and accessories are also part of the business, with customers having a range of products to choose from.Mudjanima disclosed to The Namibian that her clients are women and men who come from all over Windhoek, with some from outside the capital and are of all ages.She also said in special circumstances, it was also part of her business to go to clients’ bases and work on them in the comfort of their own homes.She said she has learnt a lot from being self-employed and doing business.”I have been through periods of failing.I don’t embrace failure but I can’t avoid it because it it part of life; it has, however, made me stronger.When building a business one is also building his or her character…”said the highly-determined Madjanima.To make her work more attractive and to strive for that competitive edge, Mudjanima makes it a point to travel around the world in search for expertise and goods that can make her customers happy.Recently she was in China on a orientation expidition where she also bought products for her salons.She goes to South Africa regularly for refresher courses and at times sends her staff to attend the courses.Mudjanima is an avid fighter for youths’ rights, saying that youths are the present and future leaders of Namibia.She called on young people to pool resources and set up projects that would assist fellow unemployed youths.She encouraged youths to be focussed on their strengths and use that to their advantage in pursuing their destiny in life.Although she is a businesswoman, Mudjanima still resides at home with her parents and two siblings.She loves to read in the spare time she has between running her business and her studies.Running two beauty salons and managing a staff compliment of 13 is a demanding task and not a small thing especially if you are aged only 24!
