A wildfire that broke out on a resettlement farm on Monday has spread to Etosha National Park.
A park ranger says officials have managed to contain the inferno on Monday, but it broke out again on Tuesday afternoon due to strong winds.
The fire is currently burning at the western zone of the park’s general area of Okawao, bypassing the gravel road towards Okashanu and Skerpionbelt at high speed.
Ministry of Environment and Tourism spokesperson Ndeshipanda Hamunyela has confirmed the incident, saying an official statement would be released soon.
“I will have to contact the officials in the field for an update before providing official information,” she says.
The extent of the damage is not known, but troops from the Namibian Defence Force are on the ground.
The park is home to rhino, lion and elephant populations, among others.
