The president of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, will be in Namibia on a state visit on Thursday and Friday.
President Hage Geingob’s spokesperson, Alfredo Hengari, has announced this in a statement.
Hengari says during the state visit, Geingob and his counterpart will discuss the global political situation, global challenges and bilateral relations between the two countries.
The visit is part of Finland’s engagement with Africa, and part of its strategic goal of growing connections with Africa, which includes extending its diplomatic presence, supporting the African agenda, and boosting commercial links, he says.
“During the visit, Namibia will engage Finland within the framework of bilateral cooperation and the Africa Strategy of Finland,” Hengari says.
He says Finland is a major international partner of Namibia on a variety of global problems, including improving multilateralism, international law, peace building and mediation, gender and human rights advances, and renewable energy challenges.
In addition, Niinistö will lay a wreath in honour of Namibia’s heroes and heroines at the Heroes’ Acre on Thursday.
On Friday Niinistö planned to meet with prime minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, and Peter Katjavivi, the speaker of the National Assembly.
Niinistö, who will be accompanied by a business delegation from his country, will also participate in a business seminar at the Hilton Hotel.
“Finland is among Namibia’s top 20 trading partners. Namibia’s overall exports to the Finnish market totalled N$1,8 billion, down from the N$785 million in 2021.
“On the other hand, Namibia’s imports from Finland increased to N$1,1 billion in 2022 from N$388,6 million recorded in 2021,” Hengari says.
