THERE is a renewed hype that has been building up within the hip-hop community and this weekend, that energy will continue as the auditions for the second edition of the Rap Battle take place.
This time around, organisers are hoping to attract more female participants so that the next Rap Battle is not all-male once again. “What we’ve done this time around is reach out individually to female rappers, asking them to take part. Unfortunately there seems to be a sense of shyness but we hope to have women on the line-up,” PK Administration’s Popyeni Kaxuxwena said.
Kaxuxwena further noted that this time around, the Rap Battle was actually meant to be a women-only show but things didn’t quite turn out the way they planned. “Very few ladies came through so we thought it didn’t make sense in the end if the numbers were so low,” he said.
Rap Battle Namibia is an initiative which was started by PK Administration with the aim of uniting rappers to showcase their artistic skills through rhythm and poetry, also known as rap.
They have since been bringing together Namibia’s finest emcees to battle it out to award the cream of the crop.
Having hosted the successful first Rap Battle in April, PK Administration will be hosting auditions for The Rap Battle Volume 2 on Saturday, 16 September at the Warehouse Theatre at 12h00. Categories to be auditioned for are ‘Rap Song’, ‘Freestyle’ and the main one, ‘Battle Rap’.
All rappers, aspiring rappers and underground rappers are encouraged to make use of this opportunity to share their talent with the nation.
They also stand a chance to walk away with prizes that will jump-start their music careers. “We want people to come and showcase their talent.
Anyone who can rap can enter – we don’t discriminate against old school or new school rappers. As long as the crowd feels you,” Kaxuxwena said.
On the judging panel will be rappers KK, Brain The Tool, I.Sparks and Snazy. The main event is set for 27 October at the Warehouse Theatre and will be hosted by KP Illest.
