Felesianu tops Desert Storm

ALBINUS ‘Danny Boy’ Felesianu will top the bill at the ‘Desert Storm’ boxing bonanza in Swakopmund on Friday night when he takes on Tanzania’s Jonas Segu for the IBF Africa junior lightweight title.

The bonanza will be staged at Swakopmund’s indoor sport centre, the Dome, and forms part of the Kwese Friday Fight Night series, which is being promoted by Kalakoda Promotions.

There will be a total of eight fights, including two championships fights with boxers featured from Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon, DRC, Tanzania and Namibia.

Felesianu or “Danny Boy” as his fans affectionately know him, said he is relishing the opportunity to fight in his backyard in front of home support.

“I can’t wait for this fight – this boy from Tanzania must feel my pain. My training camp is going great and I’m already on weight, this my time to shine,” he said.

In the main supporting bout, another Namibian, Abraham Ndauendapo will take on South Africa’s Nkosinathi Ntshangase for the WBF Africa super featherweight title.

Other notable fights on the bill are an international non-title heavyweight bout between former WBF Africa heavyweight champion Elvis Moyo from Zimbabwe and Nigeria’s Akeem Tijani. Moyo, who has gained recent popularity by switching and competing in mixed martial arts events in South Africa, now returns to the boxing ring in the start of a bid to reclaim his WBF Africa title.

The undercard also features Cameroon Olympian and decorated amateur boxer Smaila Hamaman, who will be making his much anticipated professional debut, while the opening fight will also see Namibian boxing legend Harry Simon’s son square off in a non-title welterweight bout.

“We are delighted to be working with Kalakoda Promotions and Kwese Sport and believe this event will set the tone for regular boxing events at The Dome and positioning Swakopmund as the new fight mecca of Namibia,” Buttons Heyns of the Dome said.

With recent license agreements now in place the event is broadcast live across multiple channels: Kwese Free Sports, KS 1, on the local Namibian free to air broadcaster, on the Kwese Mobile App as well as on Soweto TV channel 251.

“This is our first event in Namibia, we have been working in harmony with the local Namibian boxing board as well as Legacy promotions to make it all happen. This country has unbelievable talent and boxing enjoys great support, so we look forward to doing more events here,” Steve Kalakoda of Kalakoda Promotions said.

With the sustained frequency of boxing events hosted in different cities every month, Kalakoda Promotions and Kwese Sports are repositioning boxing across the continent and providing a new platform to showcase the next generation of African boxing stars, it added.
