Feedlots for Meatco livestock suppliers

OPUWO – The Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) is planning to construct a feedlot at Edunda during this financial year.

Other feedlots are to be established at Oshifo, Rundu and Katima. The feedlot system is one of the strategies planned to improve the quality of meat as well as to increase profits for the corporation.Feedlots would be used by farmers who want to fatten their livestock before selling them to Meatco. The livestock would stay at the feedlot for at least three months.Currently, there is one feedlot in the Omusati Region at Oshifo, privately owned by a certain Mr Kaherero.According to the Manager of Meatco in the Northern Communal Area, Jannie Breytenbach, Kaherero’s feedlot is used as a quarantine facility, as livestock are only fed there for only 21 days before they are taken to the abattoir. However, the facility has not been used for the last year.Feedlots encourage farmers to sell younger livestock to Meatco and it would also add value to meat produced in the Northern Communal Area.Breytenbach told farmers that it was better to bring their livestock to feedlots, adding that Edunda was getting a feedlot because there is a green scheme there, which will produce grass for the feedlot.-NampaThe feedlot system is one of the strategies planned to improve the quality of meat as well as to increase profits for the corporation.Feedlots would be used by farmers who want to fatten their livestock before selling them to Meatco. However, the facility has not been used for the last year.Feedlots encourage farmers to sell younger livestock to Meatco and it would also add value to meat produced in the Northern Communal Area.Breytenbach told farmers that it was better to bring their livestock to feedlots, adding that Edunda was getting a feedlot because there is a green scheme there, which will produce grass for the feedlot.-Nampa
