Federation for people who are deaf gears up for Eswatini games

Abner Sheya

The Namibian Deaf Sports Federation is gearing up for the upcoming Southern African Development Community tournament in Eswatini.

The federation’s president, Abner Sheya, confirmed this to The Namibian on Saturday.

“Our team will leave on 25 August, and we are excited to show our talents and represent our country. We hope to secure airline tickets to ensure that our team is physically and mentally fit and ready for the games,” he said.

The Eswatini Deaf Sports Federation’s tournament, which will be held from 28 August to 3 September, will bring together seven countries, namely Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

According to Sheya, the Namibian team will consist of 18 players and five officials.

“We have confidence in our players, because we already participated in the same event last year and emerged victorious,” Sheya said.

However, this year only the football team will be representing Namibia, unlike last year when both the netball and football teams participated.

Sheya thanked NamPower for its financial support.

Ocean Young coach Andreas Asser said: “I’m very happy that my team won the tournament, and I’m very excited that my players will be representing Namibia at the Eswatini games. I hope the best players will be selected.”
